Drag Flick
Below is a link to a teaching video of Sohail Abbas, from
Pakistan who plays in the Dutch Premier League - and is currently considered
the best drag flicker in the world.
TECHNIQUE: He stands straighter than most European flickers (although he still
gets low) and puts his left foot nearer the ball before crossing his right leg.
When he gets his left leg extended (toe at goal) - he brings the ball up
parallel with his body (easily pulling the ball) - he keeps the head of his
stick open so not to push the ball into the turf creating friction - but not so
much as to have the ball slide up and over the head of his stick.
Most Flickers use centrifugal force - using the stick shaft to gain ball speed - Abbas
only uses the head - which should be easier for you to learn and master.
He has mastered the body mechanics of the "whip".
He starts his whipping motion when the ball comes parallel or equal to his body.
The hard part is to get your upper body to pull with the ball and use your wrist to
whip the ball - all at the same time (Like throwing a baseball at the end of the
throwing movement). He follows through, cracking the wrist.
Key Points:
1) Get your footwork down first
2) Don't strive for power - start at the stroke line - then move back in
increments to top of the D (and not on the first day - probably not in the
first week)
3) It's all in the mechanics (Leg work - light drag parallel to body -
then upper body pull and wrist snap to flick - whipping the ball at the goal)
