Tjerk is a Dutch native, just completed his third season with Harvard this fall.

Last year Tjerk was asked by the US Field Hockey Association if he would take the reins of the USA Women's National Team as they prepared for play-off competition, seeking entry to the World Cup. They were in transition as they had named a new head coach for the program who needed time to sort out visa issues. Then Tjerk was asked to stay on as assistant coach and help the team compete in the Netherlands at the World Cup where they won their Pool and just lost out on a Bronze medal. He also helped coach the team at the Challengers Trophy in Scotland, winning the tournament with the US team and earning a berth in the Champions Trophy 2016.

Before joining Harvard, Tjerk coached seven seasons at University of Maryland, Tjerk joined the team in 2005 and promptly helped the Terps capture back-to-back national titles in 2005 & 2006, and again in 2010 and 2011 while adding one in between for a total of 5 NCAA national titles in 7 years.

Said head coach Missy Meharg said. "His patience and ability to read tactical adjustments are major strengths. His game knowledge is not only evident in training sessions but also in video work and fundamental teaching sessions."

He is the only current coach in the country to have won national championships in NCAA Division I, USA Field Hockey (USAFH) Women's High Performance and the USAFH Men's National Championship. He was a part of the coaching staff that led the U.S. men's national team to the silver medal at the 2009 Pan American Games in Santiago, Chile - the highest finish ever for the USA men.

In Holland, van Herwaarden was an assistant coach of the Kampong 1st Ladies club team, leading them to the semifinals of the National Championship in back-to-back years. While with the team, he mentored some of the country's top field hockey players who went on to win a gold medal at the 2008 Beijing Olympics and are current members of the Dutch National team.

Who Played in the
World Cup?

World Camp Alum...
Three members of the US National team, Melissa Gonzalez, Emily Wold and Caitlin VanSickle attended Camp when they were in high school - along with former staff member, Katie O'Donnell. That's almost a 1/3 of the team. All coached by World camp co-owner, Tjerk van Herwaarden, who was assistant coach with our National team at the World Cup in Holland. They played GREAT!

You Said It...

Fairfax High has attended World Camp for the past 3 years at Swarthmore and the girls continue to rave about the program and the quality of the coaches.  It's been the best reviewed camp I've had them go to in 13 years of coaching.

World Camp USA was honestly one of the best experiences of my life. I learned so much, in four days. It was such a happy environment, and the staff was amazing. I wish I didn't have to leave today, and wish I could go back every year. It was an amazing opportunity that I was able to go this year, and it was the best time of my life. Thank you World Camp USA; Coach Steve, Wally, LG, Jopie, Judge, LuLu, Gurt, Bjourn, Arnie, Rein, Bart, and Becca.

I just wanted to take a quick moment to thank you and your staff for putting on an awesome camp for my girls. I heard from each class throughout the camp and everyone had rave reviews - from the instruction to the tournament play, to the coaches, and the theme nights. It was by far their favorite camp in years.
I heard my senior group did very well, making it all the way to the final game where they lost a tough one by a goal.
I can't say enough - it's a great feeling knowing your girls are coming home prepared, pumped and excited for season to begin in a week. Thanks for all you do and for putting on an outstanding camp. I hope my girls were courteous, respectful and followed the rules! :)
